Bedroom Organizing - Slow Process

Slowly this past week, I have been working on the bedroom. It has been a mess.

See, a mess. So I started on the right side of the room. and worked on clearing clutter and finding better methods of organizing what I want to keep. Number one step of organizing is to clear the clutter and I got ride of a bunch of never worn or never going to be worn jewelry that was just taking up needed space. Those became play jewelry for my nieces, let me say, it was fun to go through it and see my jewelry from the 1990s again.

Next, I picked up decorative boxes to hide my Scentsy squares, lotions, my collection of hand sanitizers (it's pretty bad), and hair bows to stick in my side table. I was pretty happy, so I moved on to the other wall.

The table on my side of the bed belongs to the home owner so I decided to utilize the space for perfumes, jewelry, and other misc items. It was amazing to be able to close the doors of my jewelry box.

So then my side of the bed was finished (for now, still needs more work but so much better than what it was. Next was to move to my boyfriend's side of the bed. I moved all of my stuff out of his corner of the room, and moved one of my short bookshelves to that side of the bed.

The bookshelf now gives him more counter space. The second shelf I used for our blankets, the bottom shelf was used for my small collection of craft books and a decorative box. Finding places for the stuff I wasn't able to get to yet was a bit of a challenge and the rest of the room looks terrible, but I have plans.

I'm going to tackle this monstrous heap next. One of the things I've noticed with organizing is to stay focused on what your goal is for the hour or so you've set aside and only stick to that time you set aside. Any longer and I get distracted or I decide to take a break and it doesn't get worked on again that day because I find something else to do.

Until next time, happy organizing. This geek girl is going to take a much deserved break from cleaning and play an MMO.

New Year - New Resolutions

It's New Year's Eve, time for those resolutions. Maybe you're dusting off the same resolutions you have every year, maybe there's something new. If you're like me, you want to accomplish so much in a year that you can't possibly get it done, get frustrated and don't stick to them. Not this year, this year I have a plan. It's the 5 year plan and it's the perfect year for me to start this.

I'm 25, in 5 years I'll be 30. Wow. There's so much I want to do before I hit that milestone. So here's what I'm going to do. I am going to compile a list of everything that I want to accomplish in these next 5 years: things like finish my degree, start a family, own my own house.

Go ahead, make your list too.

Got it? Okay. Good.

Next, you plan out the next 5 years. Now, this isn't written in stone, it's on paper. Flexible.

Take your list and map it out. My degree will take 2 years to finish, family will probably happen during or just after that, and finally the house will realistically happy after school and before family.

Break those down even farther: Make a graph showing the 5 years and broken down into the 4 seasons plus the holidays. So like this:

Finish it up by planning out 2 things per season, with probably 1 or 2 if you feel like you can handle it in the holiday's slot. So for 2 years, one of each of those slots will be degree for me.

By the end of it, you will have a nice little map, go ahead and stick it somewhere you will see it a lot to remind you of what you want to do. Don't be scared to use free time to also prepare for upcoming projects. You have a big convention coming up? Start pinching those pennies now. Most of all, have fun with it and remember to be flexible but not too flexible. You don't want to push everything off until your last year where you will drive yourself insane or break your back trying to carry all of what you want to do. Say in 2016 you're coming up on a big project, but have a different project planned for 2017, you want to do the 2017 one first, a lot has changed in a year. Go ahead and switch them. Have fun with it.

Hello World!

I had been thinking about this blog for awhile now, that this should happen. I am a very organized person but a few months ago I moved out of my parent's house and suddenly had to share a space with other people my age. My stuff and life have been chaos since. So I thought a good way to introduce others to organizing would be to document my path through organizing my space. Here's the catch: I am on a strict budget (which I will blog about later as I get my financial life under control) so any organizing I do will either be utilizing things I have or as cheap as I possibly can make it.

So, what do the living spaces look like before I begin? This would be the room I share with my boyfriend.

So yeah, it does need work. It looks like a tornado hit it. This is mostly my stuff too. I have already attempted making it homier with the addition of the valances, but this will be my winter project. I have also been asked by the roommate to help him get organized and my gaming stuff organization has been neglected as well as my desk at work. So, next time you see something, I will have finished something.
